How to Make Butter Tart Squares (Classic Gooey Canadian Bars)

Classic butter tart squares with a buttery shortbread crust and gooey brown sugar filling. An easy Canadian dessert bar baked in one pan.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened1/2 cup powdered sugar2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened1 cup brown sugar2 tablespoons all-purpose flour4 large eggs2 teaspoons vanilla extract3/4 cup dark corn syrup2 tablespoons white vinegar1 cup raisins, currants or chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a 9×13 inch pan with parchment paper

2. Beat butter and powdered sugar until fluffy

3. Mix in flour to form the shortbread crust dough

4. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the pan

5. Bake crust for 15–20 minutes until lightly golden

6. Beat butter, brown sugar and flour for the filling

7. Add eggs and vanilla extract and mix until smooth

8. Stir in corn syrup, vinegar and optional raisins or walnuts

9. Pour filling over the partially baked crust

10. Bake for 30–35 minutes until the filling looks set

11. Cool completely before slicing into squares

Notes

For extra gooey bars omit the flour in the filling.

Corn syrup can be replaced with maple syrup if desired.

Allow bars to cool completely before slicing for cleaner squares.
