Instructions

1. Add butter and marshmallows to a large saucepan over low heat. Stir gently as they melt together.

2. When the mixture is almost melted, stir in cocoa powder and chopped chocolate. Continue stirring until smooth.

3. Remove from heat if the chocolate begins to look grainy to prevent burning.

4. Turn off the heat and stir in the cereal. Start with 3 cups, then add more about 1 cup at a time until evenly coated.

5. Lightly grease an 8×8 inch (20×20 cm) pan and press the cereal mixture into the pan using greased hands or a spatula.

6. Finely chop the topping chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl. Microwave for 45 seconds on medium power, stir, and repeat until smooth.

7. Stir in the shortening or oil and pour the melted chocolate over the cereal bars.

8. Spread the chocolate evenly and allow it to set. Score the chocolate when it is about 60–70% set, then slice into 16 squares.

Notes

Chocolate: Use milk, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate depending on your flavor preference.

Butter: Salted or unsalted butter works well in this recipe.

Marshmallows: A 10-ounce bag equals about 5 cups of mini marshmallows.

Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Avoid refrigeration because it makes the treats too firm.
